BRIDGING THE LITERACY GAP FOR MINORITY

GIRLS AND BOYS

The Brown Girl and Brown Boy Literacy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to lowering childhood illiteracy rates. Our programs go beyond improving word recognition and contextual skills; our activity-based events and programs provide valuable life skills education.

Literacy is essential for success. It is the foundation upon which all other learning is built. Yet, there is a staggering literacy gap in this country, with low-income children and children of color falling far behind their more affluent peers. This disparity has a profound impact on educational opportunities and life chances. It is our responsibility to close this gap so that all children can have an equal chance at success.

Our Goal is to Change the Landscape in the Disparity of Literacy By:

Providing safe, fun, and engaging environments that encourage literacy skills in innovative ways.

There is no one size fits all approach when it comes to encouraging literacy skills, as different children will respond to different approaches. However, there are some general principles that can be followed in order to create an environment that is conducive to learning.

Promoting literacy and confidence in children to increase self-esteem and self-assurance.

A child who can read and write fluently is more likely to feel confident in themselves and their abilities, and this can translate into greater success in school and in life. By encouraging children to read and write, you can help them develop a stronger sense of self-assurance and pride.

Providing optimal conditions for children to learn and grow as readers, writers, and creatives.

When children feel supported, they are more likely to persevere when faced with difficult tasks. This is essential for growth as a reader, writer, and creative thinker. By creating a positive and stimulating learning environment, educators can lay the foundation for a lifetime of exploration and growth.

“As an author, I am passionate about ensuring that all children have the opportunity to develop strong literacy skills. As an advocate, I know the depths of creativity literacy can offer.”
